Looking for niche’s and areas of interest
One of the more challenging aspects of being a sales person is loving what
you sell. It’s difficult to get behind products sometimes that you either just
don’t get into or don’t excite you. It’s also much easier to get through the
slow times selling a product you are confident about and enjoy, because it’s
much harder to cut and run when it’s your passion. The key though is how do you
make it and keep it your passion?
A huge advantage for a sales person who loves what they sell is that day and
night they think about that niche’. They also plan, dream, read up on, buy
magazines for, watch for news about and are personally involved in that area of
interest. To sell it is just like telling friends about a favorite sport or cool
thing on TV, etc…
Does that mean a sales person shouldn’t sell unless they love it? Not
necessarily; however people from Stephen King to Bill Gates who’ve really made
careers and a name for themselves have been fanatical about their product or
service.
What if my “niche’” isn’t sellable? Can’t happen. People have sold pet rocks,
macaroni sculptures, swamp land, etc… it’s all about your excitement and the
ability to find out where the people are who buy your products.
There was a TV special on Google and how it affects business not so long ago.
Surprisingly it was an upbeat “make you feel good” program about sales and how
Google helps large and small businesses achieve sales through AdWords alike. One
of the key stories was a cowboy boot manufacturer that was about to close and
how his whole business was turned around simply by Google AdWords. One of the
questions posed to the owner (who was AdWord savvy at 80+years old!) was if
Google could bury him in orders; to his reply in an almost frightened look,
“Yes, we have to shut them off sometimes. We could easily be overwhelmed by
Google.”
The Google story is a great answer to both questions. If you love what you are
doing you can be AdWord savvy at 80+ and if you enjoy what you sell, you’ll find
a way to get it to market. Besides, how great is it to feel like you’re always
having a good time because you’re doing what you love? Find out what it is and
sell it to the world, even if it’s just on the side for now. You’ll find in no
time how you love being a sales person.
